Mid-range hotels

Being a local, I haven't actually stayed in too many Brisbane hotels. In fact, only two — both memorable New Year's Eve nights in my uni days, which involved doing the city mall and fireworks watching madness, followed by a group retreat to a spot far away from the block-long cab ranks (this was in the days before the government sensibly introduced NightLink to provide some post-midnight public transport for party nights), and a spa for the morning after. But both venues — venerable Brisbane hotels — are still worth a recommendation. The centrally situated Sebel King George Square (previously the Carlton Crest) and the Mercure on North Quay.

In the same mid-range price bracket is Lennons on the Queen Street Mall, now operated by Chifley Hotels. It also has a neat piano bar downstairs which is worth a look for a bit of nostalgic musical charm and a very reasonably priced glass of wine on a Friday night.

For those with the cash

For those more cashed up, the Stamford Plaza has a great spot overlooking the river at the end of Edward Street. For those who also have an eye for history, its development caused all the controversy which led to former premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen being tried (and acquitted) for an alleged donation of a hundred grand in a brown paper bag. We're not so much into subtropical style corruption these days, but the hotel still has a good rep, as does the Hilton on Queen Street (which is also a nice Friday night drinking spot) and the Marriott at the Petrie Bight end of Queen — for my money, one of the few architecturally interesting of the new mile-high hotel towers.

Meanwhile, South Bank is well-catered for by Rydges.

Funky end of the market

At the other (and possibly more funky) end of the market, backpackers can choose from the Ritz equivalent — Birdie Num Num, where odd things are reputed to occur in the accompanying night club, to the lively and historic Palace, formerly the People's Palace — a Salvation Army hostel — and just down the hill from Central Station (and it also has an interesting bar). Bunk in the Valley and Banana Benders on Petrie Terrace overlooking the CBD are also reliable, according to student travellers I've had a yarn to.

I have stayed at Tinbilly Travellers Backpacker and it was the best I've stayed at on my travels so far! I is located opposite the Transit Centre, has great secure, clean accommodation with genuinely friendly, helpful local staff that know the Brisbane hidden gems and and a really fun party bar and grill! It is an international bar for students and travellers and offers the best valued steak in town! You have to try it's famous 1 kg steak! It's awesome!
