"Canberra suffers as the much-maligned and boring baby sibling of Australia's capitals."
Canberra Insider

I moved to Canberra at the age of 19 to start my university degree in art history, curatorship and Spanish. The decision to move from Sydney was met with dismay from everyone I knew: Canberra suffers as the much-maligned and boring baby sibling of Australia's capitals. In the years that followed I proved everyone wrong and have come to love the place.

What's your favourite thing to do on a Sunday?

After a sleep in, I'll head over to Tilley's and camp out with newspapers and friends for a long morning of food, coffee and conversation. If I'm feeling active I'll head for a bike ride. If not, in summer it's all about late afternoon/early evening picnics near the lake or on top of one of Canberra's surrounding mountains.

How would you spend a long weekend?

Friday: drive to Bungendore, a small country town a half-hour north-east of Canberra, and wander through the antique stores and second-hand bookshops. Saturday: drink boutique beer at the Wig and Pen and soak it up with food in Dickson. Sunday: recover with a slow day of alternating cafes and exhibitions.

What's your idea of a good night out?

Start out with an Indian Feast, amongst opulent wallpaper at Blu Ginger (5 Genge St, Canberra City, 6247 2228). After, head across to Hippo Lounge Bar to watch sexy bartenders make delicious cocktails. If there's a good gig on I'd head over to Transit Bar or to Bar 32 to dance the night away.

Lovely Article Sophie! I'm very impressed at your sense of fulfillment in our town - Im a born and bred Canberra girl, now living in Bungendore, which you describe as quaint and gorgeous (so true). Also, you mention Hippo Bar - which is an establishment my partner has owned and operated for the last 9 years. It's certainly a place to taste divine cocktails and absorb the vibe of canberra. Hippo Bar also has live music on weeknights, so why not settle in for a martini or 2??
