If you're after an adrenaline fix, you can't beat Tasmania for all manner thrilling experiences. Our Insider shares the best thrills on offer.

Port Arthur Ghost Tour

If you're anything like me, just standing in the grounds of the most violent convict colony in the country will give you the creeps. Terrify yourself even further by joining a guided group tour of Port Arthur — at night! Experienced guides show you through the ruins by lantern-light, telling spine-tingling tales of the supernatural. Open your mind and lose yourself in the spooky tales and electric atmosphere of the historic site in the dark. Who knows, you may even be lucky enough to witness the presence of the ghost of the little girl that many visitors claim to have seen over the years.

Moto Adventure Tasmania

If you prefer to push the sightseeing limits at your own crazy pace, then try a self-guided motorcycle tour. Moto Adventure Tasmania supplies all the gear you'll need to get out and explore the state at your leisure, as fast or slow as that may be, from the seat of a mighty motorcycle. Tour the regions suggested on their website, or grab a map and choose your own adventure. The Huon Trail leading down to the south of the state is perfect for amateur daredevils; there's some scary bends down through the forest that will certainly thrill riders and passengers alike.

Tahune Airwalk

Hoping to inject some extreme adventure into a family holiday, but need something tame enough to let the kids get involved, too? The Tahune Forest Airwalk is fun for everyone, with soaring views above the treetops from the suspended cantilever 48m above the surface of the river below. The kids can even have a go at cable hang gliding — it's safe and recommended for all ages. Give the overpriced cafe and stampeding tourists in the visitor centre a miss — the food is terrible, and the service worse. Save your sanity by packing a yummy picnic, stop and stock up at the bakery in Geeveston just before you arrive.

Bay of Fires

It hasn't been named the world's hottest travel destination for 2009 by Lonely Planet for nothing! The Bay of Fires on the north-east coast has been the local's best-kept secret for years.

Organised tours here are extremely well done, led by young local guides, and suitable for even the most unfit. But if you're after authentic adventure, forget about the all-inclusive guided trips. There are thousands of walking trails throughout even the most remote areas of Tasmania — from icy mountains to isolated beaches. Pack plenty of supplies, warm waterproof clothing, and start exploring for yourself!
