Jules Lund is a long-term reporter for Channel Nine's Getaway show and the host of the Logies. He's also an avid snowboarder and outdoor adventure fan with an ongoing love affair with New Zealand. We've asked him to contribute his travel tips and stories for those thinking of heading over the ditch for a bit of winter fun this year.
Heliskiing, heliskiing, heliskiing! I would love to do that! To be able to be lifted on top of the world in a helicopter, and land on snow that's never been touched. You've got 15 kilometres of runs that have never been touched. I couldn't think of anything better than that the adrenaline, the exhilaration. You get to do one of my favourite activities, snowboarding, but it's also coupled with one of the most spectacular views you'll ever see you're up on the mountain, the sun is starting to set, you're burning down the slope, on top of the world looking at spectacular views as far as the eyes can see.
I'd take a bunch of my mates with me and we'd have the best time. Then we'd get choppered down again to one of those schminky hotels they have in Queenstown like the Spire or Eichhardts, get in front of the open fire, get in the spa bath, crack open some cold New Zealand beers, then go out and have a meal of gorgeous New Zealand beef or lamb, go out and hang out and play pool til the bars close.
I'd also love to go into the snow caves on the Fox Glacier and do a skydive between the north and south islands. One day…
