MacDonald's Cottages
Just a handful of family-run guesthouses accommodate visitors to Nananu-i-Ra Island off northern Viti Levu. MacDonald's Cottages faces a white snorkelling beach, and dive boats pick up from their dock. All of the guesthouses serve meals.

Mango Bay Resort
Young flashpackers congregate in the dormitories of Mango Bay Resort, but there are also beachfront bures (cottages) and set-safari tents. It's nonstop sporting activities by day, nonstop parties by night. At full moon, a bonfire is set on Mango Bay's white beach, on the Coral Coast between Nadi and the capital Suva.

Sheraton Denarau
The Sheraton and Westin properties on Denarau Island just outside of Nadi have really mastered the 'something for everyone' concept. At the Sheraton Fiji you'll find excellent facilities (and often great bargains) for families with children. Guests at the Westin Denarau are still welcome to the Sheraton's facilities, but tend to be couples after a romantic spa getaway. And located in between the two are the Sheraton Villas for families or groups looking for private accommodation with access to all the mod cons of a big resort.

Moody's Namena
Namenalala Island in the Koro Sea between Fiji's largest islands is a refuge for seabirds and hawksbill turtles with an untouched reef all around. The government-appointed caretakers, Tom and Joan Moody, run a small, all-inclusive resort with six hexagonal bures perched on the hillside. Only scuba diving costs extra.

Navini Island Resort
The Mamanuca Islands off Nadi are dotted with resorts large and small. Only 10 fan-cooled bures are on Navini Island, surrounded by beaches and a living reef. Guests eat together at long tables, if they haven't requested private dining on the beach. It's quiet and idyllic.

Oarsman's Bay Lodge
Near the Blue Lagoon in the heart of the Yasawa Islands, Oarsman's Bay Lodge caters to those who want upscale service at moderate prices. Aside from half a dozen deluxe bures, there's a 13-bed dorm above the restaurant. The beach and snorkelling here are unsurpassed and the hiking is also great.

Qamea Resort and Spa
Qamea Island off Taveuni in northeastern Fiji is one of Fiji's ultimate hideaways. Qamea Resort and Spa offers 16 air-conditioned bures, upscale meals, great snorkelling, and a beachfront spa (extra charge). Weddings and honeymoons are big here, and Qamea is gay and lesbian friendly.

Royal Hotel
Fiji's oldest hotel, the Royal, has graced Fiji's old capital Levuka since 1852. Overhead fans twirl above the long wooden bar in the lounge and bland English meals served in the dining room. If the rooms upstairs are too Spartan, there are self-catering cottages in the garden.

South Seas Private Hotel
Like any capital, Suva has many business and tourist hotels. The South Seas is a survivor from an earlier era with no-frills rooms, a common kitchen, and soft seating on the porch. It's a short walk from the Fiji Museum, Thurston Botanical Gardens, and other relics of the British Raj.

Wayalailai Resort
Wayalailai Resort has one of the most dramatic settings in the Yasawa Islands, directly below Wayasewa Island's highest peak. This village-operated resort specialises in scuba diving but it also makes a perfect base for hikers.
