Rome is Abigail Hole's second home. She visited on holiday in 2003 and never really left.

She's married to a Roman, her first son was born in Rome, and she's written about the Eternal City for Lonely Planet, i-escape, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many other publications.

What's your favourite thing to do on a Sunday?

Wander around the Centro Storico, have a lazy lunch somewhere, then spend the afternoon on dreamy Aventine Hill. In the evening I’d go to a cosy enoteca in Monti.

How would you spend a long weekend?

Go on a zingarata (aimless adventure), exploring Rome's jewel-green surrounding countryside. On Saturday, I'd head for a swim in Lago di Albano, followed by an evening in the hilltop town of Frascati. On Sunday I'd drive 40km north to the hilltop pile of Calcata, a storybook medieval town packed with artists' studios and great restaurants.

What's your idea of a good night out?

I’d head to Pigneto, perhaps eat at Pasolini’s old favourite Necci (+39 06 9760 1552), have a drink at a pavement café-bar along Via del Pigneto and then go to see a band at Fanfulla 101.
